For decades, researchers have anticipated that multi-sourced, integrated data-systems will result in societal and environmental benefits for cities. While communication technologies are improving at exponential rates, there is still much to be learned about how to apply them to real-world problems. Location data is generated by smartphones across the globe continuously, yet they are rarely used in municipal decision making processes. Knowing the best ways to gain meaningful insights using large data from such large data sources, for the benefit of people and the planet, is a problem that researchers and technology companies have yet to overcome. In addition, to date, most related research and tools have focused on the study of ecological processes, and the study of people, separately. Yet, the challenges facing our planet will no longer tolerate such segregation. As a postdoctoral researcher I am working with an interdisciplinary team at UBC to develop methods for using data from both environmental and human sensors to create solutions to global issues that face both societies, and ecologies.

  • 2015 - 2020
    University of Calgary

    PhD Candidate

My research focuses on human-centered design: the study of human behavior as a way to inform the design of physical spaces. My work involves participatory mapping, behavioral research methods and data modeling. My doctoral studies analyze and represent spatial data collected from smartphones to provide meaningful human-centered evidence that will inform master planning designs of university campuses.
